Improving railway maintenance schedules by considering hindrance and capacity constraints

چکیده

Abstract The availability of railway networks is important for society and the economy. To keep infrastructure in good condition, regular maintenance needed. Regular achieved by devising schedules that assign safe work zones to crews executing preventive activities. This study aims optimize both train operators contractors, considering (a) hindrance parked passenger trains planned freight trains, (b) workload track workers. Further, operations are distinguished into different engineering fields (switches, straight tracks, overhead wiring) since this influences amount hindrance. method presented designing a novel mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model considers these aspects. In our Dutch case study, we assess new scheduling show large improvements can be made terms mean total operators. We also computational costs when using exact (branch-and-bound) or metaheuristic solution methods solving with up 25 zones.

Hub Covering Location Problem Considering Queuing and Capacity Constraints

In this paper, a hub covering location problem is considered. Hubs, which are the most congested part of a network, are modeled as M/M/C queuing system and located in placeswhere the entrance flows are more than a predetermined value.A fuzzy constraint is considered in order to limit the transportation time between all origin-destination pairs in the network. On modeling, a nonlinear mathematica...

Optimization models for improving periodic maintenance schedules by utilizing opportunities

We present mathematical models for finding optimal opportunistic maintenance schedules for systems, in which components are assigned maximum replacement intervals. Our models are applied to safety-critical components in an aircraft engine, for which maintenance opportunities naturally arise since entire modules are sent to the workshop when maintenance is required on one or more components. Cas...

Railway crew capacity planning problem with connectivity of schedules

We study a tactical level crew capacity planning problem in railways which determines the minimum required crew size in a region while both feasibility and connectivity of schedules are maintained. We present alternative mathematical formulations which depend on network representations of the problem. A path-based formulation in the form of a set-covering problem along with a column-and-row gen...

Addressing nodal constraints on railway capacity

As demand for passenger and freight transport on Britain’s railways increases, providing additional capacity and making the best use of the existing infrastructure are priorities for the industry. Since the stations and junctions forming the nodes of the railway network tend to form the constraints on route and network capacity, improved understanding of their operation and capacity characteris...

Punctuality and Railway Maintenance

The iron ore railway in northern Scandinavia is a single track line that stretches from the Gulf of Bothnia to the Norwegian Sea. Mixed traffic on a single-track railway makes the traffic sensitive and prone to disturbances. To improve punctuality and efficiency in the traffic flow, the link between disturbances and their impacts on train delays needs to be analysed and understood more precisel...
